Pouwhenua, Waiotahe Beach

If you love the beach, you’ll love this. Start at the pouwhenua (carved welcome poles) 4km from Opotiki. Head west along Waiotahe Beach to Waiotahe River and reserve area, which is ideal for a picnic.

Nukuhou Saltmarsh

Nukuhou Saltmarsh is a 20-minute drive from Opotiki. Anytime you’re travelling between Opotiki and Ohope, it’s well worth a stop.

Ohiwa Domain and Onekawa Te Mawahi

Ohiwa Domain and the proposed Onekawa Regional Park are 15 minutes’ drive from Opotiki. The bush tracks are fairly steep, but the distances are short so it’s an ideal family walk.

Hukutaia Domain

The Hukutaia Domain ranks as one of Opotiki's main attractions.

It is a 5 hectare remnant of extensive native forest that was set aside as a reserve by one of the original owners Mr E.M. Hutchinson in the early 1900's.

Te Waiti Nature Trail

Te Waiti Nature Trail is an easy loop that passes through lovely nikau palm and tawa forest. It’s a great family walk, half an hour’s drive from Opotiki, and close to the DoC campsite at the Boulders.

The Nature Trail is close to Te Waiti Hut Track, so both are worth visiting.

Opape, Tautarangi Walkway

Walk east from the Opape boat ramp. Cross the stream into the scenic reserve to enjoy the coastal walkway with stunning sea views and native flora.

Marawaiwai Walk

A few minutes’ drive south of Opotiki, Marawaiwai Walk is an ideal family outing. The track follows a stream through a lovely tract of kahikatea forest, with a wide range of native flora and birdlife. There’s parking, and picnic facilities.
