If you love the beach, you’ll love this. Start at the pouwhenua (carved welcome poles) 4km from Opotiki. Head west along Waiotahe Beach to Waiotahe River and reserve area, which is ideal for a picnic.

Alternatively, from the pouwhenua, walk east along the beach to the mouth of the Waioeka River.
