Ohiwa Domain and Onekawa Te Mawahi
Ohiwa Domain and the proposed Onekawa Regional Park are 15 minutes’ drive from Opotiki. The bush tracks are fairly steep, but the distances are short so it’s an ideal family walk.
The hilltop is the site of Onekawa, once a pa of the Upokorehe iwi. From here, there are sensational views of Ohiwa Harbour, White Island (Whakaari) and Whale Island (Moutohora), and out towards East Cape.
The tracks link to the Ohiwa harbourside trail and Waiotahe Beach. A short walk from Ohiwa Harbour Road, there’s a small waterfall, with glowworms at night.
> Get there: Take SH2 (Waiotahe Beach Road) to the bridge at Waiotahe, turn onto Ohiwa Beach Road. Follow this to Bryan Road for one access point, or turn onto Ohiwa Harbour Road for the other.
