DOC Camping Sites

If you enjoy getting off the beaten track, the Department of Conservation (DOC) offers several superb campsites in the Ōpōtiki and Eastern Bay of Plenty region.

These spots are all ideally placed for enjoying your own activities such as hiking, swimming and fishing. Please note, you need to have all your own camping gear.

Ōpōtiki is proud to be a Zero Waste area, so if you are staying in these campsites, take all rubbish and recycling to the Opotiki Resource Recovery Centre.

Anaura Bay Campsite

Camp next to a beautiful beach and alongside a stream.

> Get there: SH 35 between Tolaga Bay and Tokomaru Bay.

Boulders Campsite

Next to the pretty Te Waiti Stream, for swimming, picnicking and bush walks.

> Get there: Te Waiti Valley, off Otara Road.

Manganuku Campsite

Camp beside one of the few remaining historic Howe truss bridges, and enjoy handy walks such as the Little Manganuku and Manganuku tracks.

> Get there: Adjacent SH 2, Waioeka Gorge

Whitikau Campsite

This remote campsite is at the entrance to Raukumara Forest Park, for hiking, mountain biking, hunting, fly fishing, and more.

> Get there: Takaputahi Road, off Old Motu Coach Road at Toatoa.
