Motu Trails Cycle Trail

Be set free. The Motu Trails Great Ride offers  you everything from the beachside fun of the Dunes Trail, to the wilderness of the Old Motu Coach Road and the adventure of the Pakihi Track.

The Dunes Trail is superb if you have children. You have several access points to the beach and multiple options for picnic spots. The best place to start out is Memorial Park. Cross the Pakowhai ki Otuaopuku bridge over the Otara river, and follow the signs.

The Motu Road Trail is an intermediate trail that follows the historic Old Motu Coach Road through remote bush country wilderness. The trail can be ridden from either Ōpōtiki or Matawai, though you'll get the best views (and more downhill riding) starting in Matawai.

For experienced mountain bikers, the Pakihi Track is unmissable.  With virtually no uphills, this historic stock route weaves its way through the beautiful Urutawa Forest, home to many species of native birds.

For details of trails, maps, places to stay, bike hire, transport providers, and more, visit www.motutrails.co.nz

For shuttle services to the top of the Pakihi Track on the Motu Trails, contact Motu Trails Ltd or Motu Trails Hire & Shuttle.  If you would prefer something a little different and quicker, try a heli shuttle with Opotiki Helicopters or Central Helicopters.

> Get there: For the start of the Motu Trails Cycle Trail, take St John Street to Memorial Park.
